Photographs Relating to Hackbridge & Hewittic Electric Co Ltd.

Does anyone have any sightings of Hackbridge & Hewittic transformers, with the nameplate on the top, still in operation? I think I saw one at Brading station IOW but, by the time I got my camera. the train had gone past it.

As part of the commissioning, for the electrification of the Southampton line, a short circuit test was required to make sure the circuit breakers operated correctly. In the top picture you can see the sparks.

Us brothers went along to see this (as an unofficial, early form of 'take your child to work day'), although we were kept well clear for this test. It was stressed to us how dangerous this test was in case the circuit breakers failed to operate.

Perhaps the most dangerous part was driving down from Hersham in those days roads like A3/A31 were sometimes 3 lane (one in each direction + a common central overtaking lane) I seem to remember this had a high attrition rate on H&H staff.

There are more pictures in the Rowland Baker collection.
